As of now, Indian applicants who had their student visas denied, had the option to submit an informal appeal (also known as a remonstration) to the German Embassy or Consulate. This allowed them as a second opportunity to basically dispute their visa denial without going through to the legal method. It was simple, paper, and most of the time, effective. 

As of July 2025, this will no longer be an option. The informal remonstration process will be discontinued.

2. Legal Appeals are the only option

Now, if your visa is declined, the only way to appeal is by way of a formal legal appeal. This is a longer, more expensive and more complicated process. You will need to provide legal documents, file documents in Germany courts, and usually with assistance of a German lawyer.

This change affects all Indian visas, not just students; however, for student visa applicants, this is particularly challenging because timelines for university enrolment are often tight.

The new regulations are consistent with Germany’s broader reasoning to simplify the number of visa decisions and reduce the number of repeat or frivolous applications. Don’t wait until the last minute.  begin your visa application process at least 3 to 4 months before your university intake date. This time frame allows you to fix problems without messing up your academic schedule.

• Evidence of financing (blocked account, evidence of scholarship or sponsor)
• Transcript and proof of language proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, TestDaF)

 3. Avoid Relying on Appeals

Think of your first application as your last application. Don’t take a casual approach, or apply with the idea of, “I can fix it later.” This approach does not work under the new rules.
